Non-vital dead tooth diagnosis

Hearing that a tooth is "dead" can sound alarming. In clinical dentistry, a dead or non-vital tooth simply means that the inner living pulp containing nerves and blood vessels has lost its blood supply—most commonly due to deep bacterial tooth decay or sports/physical trauma.

Tell-Tale Symptoms of a Dead Tooth

Discoloration: The tooth slowly turns gray, yellow, or dark brown as red blood cells break down inside the pulp.
Dull or Throbbing Pain: Pain when biting down or spontaneous throbbing as pressure builds within the root tip.
Gum Swelling or Pimples (Fistula): A small pustule on the gum next to the affected root leaking fluid.

Can a Dead Tooth Be Saved?

Yes, absolutely! In the vast majority of cases, a dead tooth does not need to be pulled out. Root Canal Treatment (RCT) is the gold standard procedure to save the natural tooth. During RCT, Dr. Sheema cleans out the infected pulp tissue, sterilizes the internal root canals, and seals them with biocompatible gutta-percha.

Protecting the Tooth with a Dental Crown

Because a non-vital tooth no longer receives moisture and nutrients from blood circulation, it becomes more brittle over time. Placing a high-strength porcelain or zirconia crown protects the tooth against chewing forces and completely restores its lifelike aesthetic appearance.
